Ethics in Data Sharing - a best practice for NRENs

SURFnet regularly receives requests from researchers to share all kinds of operational data from and about its network. Current practice is that we share this data only under strict conditions (NDAs). While this policy works to a certain extent, we would like to move to a situation where we have a policy that is more solidly founded in ethics and the current legal framework in the EU with respect to privacy. We would also like this new policy to be more open such that we can share more data, more often with more researchers. Over the course of 2014 SURFnet has been working towards such a policy and in this presentation we will introduce our policy as well as evaluate its effectiveness based on case studies of real-life data sharing requests from the first half of 2015.
