The deployment and management of access-networks is traditionally beyond the domain of NRENs, and the responsibility of the local institute. However, trends like Bring Your Own Device and Unified (Wireless) Communcations have become extremely important within higher education and research domains. A trusted, open and high quality Wi-Fi-network should now be regarded as critical part, and bottleneck, of the end-to-end connectivity. Therefore, SURFnet believes that NRENs should take their responsibility within this area. In this paper we address SURFnet’s ambition, considerations, pilot experiences and the tender developments, in building an excellent, centrally managed Wi-Fi service, or Wi-Fi-as-a-Service (WaaS), on the premises of Dutch education and research institutes. The presentation will answer questions towards grounds, user research, technical innovation and the business model for developing and deploying such a service. It will feed the discussion if and how NRENs should get involved into delivering wireless services.
