Extending InfiniBand to Trans Continential Distances

In the latter part of 2014 the National Computational Infrastructure (Australia) and A*Star (Singapore) collaborated on a successful project (which was demonstrated at SuperComputing14) to connect the Infiniband fabrics operated by both organisations using a pair of Obsidian Strategics Longbow devices over a 30,000km 10G link crossing the Pacific twice. Focusing on the transfer of bioinformatics gene sequence data and exploring the use of different file transfer protocols including the traditional RSYNC, the HPC oriented bbcp and Obsidian DSYNC a significant improvement in the transfer time and data rates was realised. This presentation describes the networks, equipment, capabilities and performance characteristics of the project.
