The Transformation of Multipoint Video Communication

Video compression has had a long history. Starting from the invention of buffer-constrained rate control in 1978 and the first hybrid codec (motion-compensated block-based transform coding) in 1981, there have been numerous developments that have transformed the ways through which video is used in communications, and especially multipoint video communication. In this presentation we follow a historical perspective, identifying key milestones in the development of the field over a 25 year period.
